Avenue of the Giants
The Avenue of the Giants is a scenic highway in Northern California, United States, running through Humboldt Redwoods State Park. It is an old alignment of U.S. Route 101, and continues to be maintained by the state as State Route 254.
The soaring forests are a hint of what this part of the world looked like before 1848. That’s when gold was discovered in the region, bringing miners and loggers to an area where it’s believed there were 2 million acres of old-growth redwood forests. Today, just 4 percent of that total remains, with much of it protected inside the more than 50,000 acres of Humboldt Redwoods State Park.
